Evaluating Sources for the Personal Project (1)

You can evaluate a source by considering these factors:

Credibility of author - who wrote or produced the resource? Was she qualified to to do?

Currency - is the resource up-to-date?

Accuracy - has the resource been peer-reviewed or professionally edited?

Relevance - does the resource provide information that is helpful to your search?

Intended audience - at what level (age, qualifications, etc) has the resource been pitched?

Objectivity  - does the resource come from a neutral source or are factors such as bias/political affiliation at play?

What Should I Cite? A Student Guide.

Students can sometimes find it difficult to decide what to cite. Here are some tips:

You have two choice for your report:

  • Background reading that added to your general knowledge for your topic is listed in the WORKS CONSULTED.
  • Information that you cite, quote or refer to directly is listed in the WORKS CITED.

You should cite (using an in-text citation and an entry in your Works Cited) the following:

  • Direct quotations from books, websites, journals, interviews, emails, etc. Direct quotations are written inside quotation marks.
  • Paraphrases (ideas that you have stated in your own words).
  • General ideas, concepts, or theories that you have read about.

For more information on in-text citations and use of the Works Cited, please refer to the MLA tab of this website.

If in doubt, ask your supervisor or Mr. Crouch for guidance.

Where can I find useful resources? A student guide.

You can find resources in the following places:

  • The ISD Library and LRC - books, journals and magazines, DVDs, reference materials
  • The ISD eLibrary - electronic books, fiction and non-fiction
  • The ISD eResources - a large variety of online encyclopaedia and databases
  • The Internet - use Google Advanced to narrow your search
  • Local Libraries
  • Friends, family, ISD staff, network contacts
