MLA Workshop for Staff

Aim of the Workshop

Teachers will use ISD Library resources to create a short MLA format document with citations and a Works Cited

1. Read this powerpoint presentation. Find out how to format an in-text citation.

MLA http://www.isdseniorlibraries.com/mla--isd-guide.html

2. Read this powerpoint presentation – for information on avoiding academic dishonesty

Academic Honesty http://www.isdseniorlibraries.com/academic-honesty.html based on the new position paper from IB.

3. Download the MLA template and use it to create your own document

MLA template for Word http://www.isdseniorlibraries.com/mla-format-template.html

4. Navigate to EasyBib.

Log in at the ISD Intranet. Go to Senior School – Senior School Library – Citing Sources – EasyBib

Be aware of several factors when using EasyBib:

  • When citing resources, it is vital that you check the entries and add any missing information - failure to do may result in an instance of academic dishonesty
  • URLs should be included for websites
  • Students may choose between 59 citation models for the different types of resource materials (images, databases, journals, etc.)

5. Navigate to these pages and take a look (if appropriate to your teaching level)

Excellent EEs http://www.isdseniorlibraries.com/fifty-excellent-ees.html

Two DVDs of excellent EEs are also available from the LRC.

EE guide is also available. I recommend that all students and supervisors read it carefully: http://www.isdseniorlibraries.com/ee-docs.html

Activity

Use the e-Resources, the Word template, and the resources listed about to create a WORD document with some in-text citations and a Works Cited.

Your document could/should contain:

  • Pages number (top right)
  • Surname (top right)
  • Cover page
  • (Abstract)
  • Table of Contents – formatted automatically
  • Several paragraphs of text
  • Several uses of headings (Heading level 1, 2)
  • A Works Cited (formatted with hanging indents)
  • Your work should be automatically double spaced with paragraph indents, and in a plain font (Times, Calibri, Arial, etc.)
