Grade 11 Course - Introduction to the Extended Essay and Academic Writing
This course will be presented to all 11th Grade students each year. The course presenters are Mr. O'Farrell and Mr. Crouch. Each session will focus on a new set of skills and information needed for success in the Extended Essay, and will be accompanied by course notes. You will also be issued with a detailed set of deadlines for each step of the Extended Essay research and writing process. The session documents will be given you in print and will appear electronically on this page.

Session 1 - Introduction to the Extended Essay

In the first session we will look at the documentation surrounding the Extended Essay and the first steps that you need to take in choosing a subject, finding a teacher supervisor and selecting a draft topic for your research question. We will follow this by looking at the criteria for assessment, as well as taking a first look at the research and writing process.

Session 2 - Research & Resources

In this session we will look at how to carry out research, using the Library OPAC and a range of e-Resources. We will focus on primary and secondary sources, using keyword searches, GoogleAdvanced, and we will take a look at EasyBib, and Questia.

In session three we will focus on MLA format, from recording sources (manually and electronically) and writing in-text citations, to creating a bibliography. We will also look at MLA format for putting together a research paper.

The fourth session will focus on the writing process. We will start with looking at how to put together a basic outline, followed by the rough draft (title page, abstract, introduction, body, conclusion, illustrations, appendix, documentation, references/works cited), and lastly the editing process.

Session 5 - Planning Ahead

In the final session of our course, you will be given a number of tasks designed to make a positive start to your Extended Essay. You will be provided with a roadmap that will take you through the research and writing process over the summer, through to September and then to the final deadline in November.
